JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
-
Applies the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes for hospital ancillary, outpatient/physician office, professional fee, emergency department, ambulatory surgery and/or observation accounts as assigned for data retrieval, analysis and claims processing. With the appropriate education and training, this position may also be assigned the coding of uncomplicated obstetric, newborn, medical and/or surgical inpatient records.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
-
The Health Information Management (HIM) department manages health information systems and medical records to ensure we meet medical, legal and ethical standards. HIM staff work with Samaritan Health Services patients, staff and providers as well as numerous external entities to maintain the accuracy and completeness of the medical record; provide coded data for evaluation of services and reimbursement; and ensure authorized access to patient medical information in accordance with privacy and confidentiality requirements.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
-
High school diploma or equivalent required.
-
Certification status as RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC or CIC required.

Two (2) years coding experience in a hospital, physician office or ambulatory care setting required.

Experience and/or training in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology and disease processes and pharmacology required.

Experience and/or training in the following preferred:
-
Computerized coding/abstracting systems and encoders.
-
Applicable coding rules and compliance guidelines.
-
Billing functions.
-
Components of a charge description master.
-
Functions of an HIM department.
-
Electronic health record.
-
ICD-10-CM.
-

All candidates will be required to satisfactorily pass a coding assessment to verify minimum coding skills.
